1062 Evaluation of Marginal Leakage of a Polyvinylsiloxane Temporary Cement

OBJECTIVE: This study compared the marginal leakage of a zinc oxide polyvinylsiloxane temporary cement (TempoSil, Coltene/Whaledent) and three other materials commonly used for provisional crown cementation. METHODS: De-identified molars (60) were arranged by descending size, sequentially numbered and individual putty matrices (Lab Putty, Coltene/Whaledent) formed. Teeth were secured in a jig and standardized crown preparations prepared using coarse diamonds and air/water spray. Putty matrices were used to fabricate bis-acryl (Integrity, Dentsply) provisional crowns. The teeth were sequentially placed into one of 5 groups (n=12); group 1, zinc-oxide eugenol (Temp-Bond, Kerr), group 2, eugenol-free zinc-oxide (Temp-Bond NE, Kerr), group 3, a calcium hydroxide base (Dycal, Dentsply), group 4, zinc-oxide polyvinylsiloxane, and group 5 (positive control), self etching resin cement (RelyX Unicem, 3M ESPE). Teeth were randomized to determine cementation order and provisional crowns were cemented in a standardized fashion following all manufacturer instructions. Following thermocycling (500 cycles, 5/55C, 15s dwell), all teeth were sealed with 2 coats of nail polish (1.0mm short of the margin) prior to immersion in 0.5% basic fuschin (7h). Each crown was quartered, dye penetration (mm) past the margin measured (8 points per tooth), and a mean calculated. RESULTS: ANOVA and Tukey post-hoc test (alpha=0.05) revealed that both groups 3 and 5 demonstrated significantly less leakage (p<0.001) when compared to the three temporary cements (groups 1, 2 and 4). No significant differences were found among groups 1, 2, and 4. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, marginal leakage occurred beneath all materials. The resin cement and the calcium hydroxide base demonstrated the least marginal leakage. The marginal leakage of the zinc-oxide polyvinylsiloxane did not significantly differ from other temporary cements. Support provided by NNMC.
