Objectives: The objective of this study is to investigate reproducibility and reliability, of a torque control motor for rotary endodontic instruments: The E-Master® (VDW GmbH Munich, Germany).

Methods: For this purpose the couple exerted during work was measured: an Endoflare® (MICRO-MEGA® Besançon France) was applied to a material whose resistance to drilling was studied beforehand. The couple undergone by material was recorded using a torque-meter.

Five numerical measures each of 9000 points during 81 seconds were recorded, for each 10 adjustment tested. These measures were analyzed by measuring the rotation couples peak values clockwise and anti-clockwise. The measured values were compared between them and to the theoretical couple values (instruction of the apparatus) by ANOVA analysis. The graphic aspect was also interpreted.

Results: ANOVA Analysis shows a good reproducibility, but of the higher peak variations may come out, at the time of the shock to blocking.

If the averages of the maximum values are close to those given by the manufacturer, graphic observation, confirmed by ANOVA analysis, show a different behavior between the values from couple in initial blocking, and those obtained at the time of repetitive blockings, who are weaker. Furthermore anti-clockwise peak values may appear higher than values clockwise.

Conclusions: In spite of some variations the studied system is reliable and reproducible; the average values corroborate those of the manufacturer. However a brutal blocking can exceed the instruction of the apparatus.
