Attitudes of Patients to Ozone in a General Practice
D. JOSHI, Private practice, London, United Kingdom

Ozone has been shown to clinically reverse carious lesions. Objectives: This study aimed to assess the attitudes of patients to a new treatment method of treating caries with an ozone delivery system (1) in a general dental practice, using a novel assessment, treatment and final protection of the treated carious lesion. Methods: The DIAGNOdent (2) was employed to objectively quantify each carious lesion to quantify caries in 80 subjects. Ozone was applied to each lesion for 30 to 40 seconds depending on the clinical severity of each lesion. After the application of a professionally applied mineral wash (1), some lesions were protected with a mineral releasing glass ionomer (3). An objective questionaire was used to record subjects satisfaction levels with this novel procedure on recall. Results: The 80 subjects reattended for re-evaluation after 6 months. There were no observed adverse events. 100% of the Patients were very happy with the Ozone treatment and 100% said they would like to have it again. After 6 months 87% of the ozone treated carious lesions had clinically reversed and this correlated with a significant reduction in the DIAGNOdent readings (P<0.05). Conclusions: Patients have a very high acceptance of this treatment regime using ozone and may be considered to be an effective alternative to conventional "drilling and filling" for early carious lesions in general dental practice which is well accepted by Patients. 1 HealOzone unit, CurOzone USA and KaVo. 2 DIAGNOdent, KaVo, Germany 3 FujiVII, Japan.
