ZIADA, Univeristy Dental School and Hospital Cork, Ireland Objective: The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the clinical performance of hybrid bridges delivered by undergraduate students between Aug 97 and April 2001, at the Department of Restorative Dentistry University Dental School and Hospital, Cork. Methods: Patients recall protocol took the form of a questionnaire and a full clinical examination of the abutment teeth and contra lateral control teeth. 26 patients were identified from the hospital records to have received 29 hybrid bridges. 4 of these patients were not available to participate in the study and 22 patients were available for examination. The following information was collected: gender, age, date of insertion, the reason for treatment, location of the hybrid bridge/s, failed/decement or debonded, the possible reason/s for failure and details of rebonding/recementation. The patient satisfaction with the overall treatment and appearance was assessed using a Visual Analogue Scale. The clinical examination included: bridge design, type of pontic, margin adaptation and location, moisture control used, presences or absence of caries on the abutment teeth. Results: Out of 25 bridges examined, 15 were in the maxilla and 10 were in the mandible. 8 (32%) bridges failed and 17 (68%) were in service at the time of examination. The mean duration of clinical service of a hybrid bridge in this study was 46.5 months (rang 28 months to 67months). The patient satisfaction with their treatment was between 90-100% for the successful bridges. Conclusion: The success rate of the hybrid bridge in this study is not comparable to the reported success rate on resin bonded and/or conventional bridge designs. | ||
