Patient Referral to Restorative Dentistry Consultation Clinics

Objectives: To analyse the patient profile and pattern of referral to Restorative Dentistry Consultation Clinics in a Dental Teaching Hospital. Methods: Patient demographic details including gender, age, and residence and referral information including referral source and presenting complaint were collected on a standardised form. Results: There was 603 referrals. The majority of patients, 60.9%, were female. The average age of the referred patients was 41.2 years(s.d. 16.8 years). The greatest proportion of patients,47.0%, were referred from the urban area surrounding the Dental Hospital. The greatest proportion of referrals was from general practitioners, (40%). The main reasons for referral were periodontal (24%), fixed prosthodontics (17.6%), endodontics (12.0%) and removable prosthodontcs/implants (11.7%). Conclusions: While there was a broad range of reasons for patient referral the greatest proportion of patients referred were female and they were from close proximity to the Dental Hospital .
