Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the micro-tensile-bond strength (µTBS) of two different adhesive system applied on dentin surfaces having smear layer or not. Methods: Totally twenty-four molar teeth without any caries were enrolled in the study. Dentin bondings, a two-step self-etching adhesive Clearfil SE Bond (CSE, Kuraray) and a one step self-etching adhesive Prompt L-Pop (PLP, 3M-Espe) were applied with the manufacturer instructions to the mid-coronal flat dentin surfaces after different smear layer treatments. All flat dentin surfaces were abraded with 600-grit SiC paper for creating a smear layer that simulating oral conditions. The smear layer treatments were as follows: Group 1: without any treatment over smear layer, Group 2: 37% phosphoric acid application for 15s. A resin-composite crown was build-up over the adhesive in thickness of 4 mm. Then teeth were stored in distilled water for 24 hours at 370C. Teeth were sectioned vertically by diamond saw with the thickness of 1mm and four specimens were obtained each teeth and 48 specimens were evaluated each group. µTBS testing was performed by Universal Testing Machine with 1mm/min crosshead speed after the adhesive interface was trimmed and obtained an interface with 1mm2. Data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis test. Results: The overall values of µTBS testing and standard deviations were 43,4a ± 6,21 and 49,5a ± 5,83 for CSE; and were 31,4b ± 9,24 and 39,6c ± 5,3 for PLP. Different superscripts exhibit the statistical significant differences. Fracture pattern of bonded specimens showed 41% cohesive dentine failure in samples tested for tensile bond strength. 91% of the specimens was showed the failure at the interface between adhesive and dentine. Conclusions: While the phosphoric acid application increases the µTBS of self-etching adhesives tested, the influence of additional etching procesure has significantly affected the one-step self-etching adhesive.
