H.N. ALKUMRU, Ş.B. TÜRKER, and B. EVREN, Marmara University, Istanbul, Turkey

Aim: Glass fiber ribbon as post materials can be used instead of a metal post when full porcelain crown restoration is indicated. The aim of this study was to evaluate the outcome of the glass fiber ribbon used as post after 5 years, between September 1999 and May 2004. Materials and Methods: A total of 27 patients, 14 men and 13 women, mean age 33 were treated during 5 years period. A total of 39 teeth (29 anterior 10 posterior) with a mean restoration time 21,38 months ( range 3 to 55 months) were treated with glass fiber ribbon as post materials (Kerr Connect Reinforcement Ribbon, Kerr, Kerr Co., USA) and Empress II full crown system as a fixed restoration. The glass fiber ribbon and the Empress crowns were cemented with resin cement (Variolink, Ivoclar Vivadent, Liechtenstein). Composite resin (Tetric Ceram, Ivoclar Vivadent, Inc, Liechtenstein) was used as core material. Empress crowns were also cemented with the same resin cement. The cause of the endodontic treatment was classified into 3 categories such as fracture, caries and trauma. Treatment of the fractured teeth (n=5) were completed after the orthodontic extrusion. The rate of success was assessed by clinical and radiographic examination in 3 months, 6 months, 1 year and following each year. The clinical failures were classified into 5 subgroups: post dislodgement, root fracture, post fracture, caries in the root, crown loosing. Results: During the evaluation, only one failure was observed as post dislodgement after 11 months of clinical use. A total of 24 posts were evaluated clinically successful. Conclusion: All post and core fabrications demonstrated remarkable success in 5 year period. The posts and cores constructed with the glass fiber ribbon's performance were satisfactory.
