O. BORAHAN1, E. FISEKCIOGLU1, and S. ALPAY2, 1 Marmara University, Istanbul, Turkey, 2 Kuledibi Hospital Abstract: Objectives: The purpose of this case report is to evaluate an abscess formation due to intralesional methylprednisolone acetate application in erosive oral lichen planus. Method: A male patient 47 years old with an histopathological and clinical diagnosis of erosive oral lichen planus (2x3cm) was treated with intralesional methylprednisolone acetate injection (5 injections each 0.1cc around the lesion every 15 days). An infection was developed after the 3rd application. MRI revealed an abscess formation and the patient was hospitalized for further therapy. Result: In this case steroids may increase the liability to infection. However inoculation of the oral flora can also be the cause of the infection. Conclusion: Although systemic adverse effects are seldom seen in intralesional steroid application, mucosal atrophy is the main local side effect of this method. In this case the cause may be the inoculation of the oral flora into submucosal tissues and asepsis and oral disinfection is mandotory in intralesional applications. | ||
