POYRAZ1, 1 Cumhuriyet Universitesi, Sivas, Turkey, 2 Cumhuriyet University, Sivas, Turkey Objectives:In this study, it was aimed to evaluate effects of selective COX-2 inhibitor meloxicam following initial periodontal treatment on IL-1â and IL-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1ra) in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) and clinical parameters in the chronic periodontitis (CP) patients. Methods:Nineteen males, 14 females totally 33 CP patients were taken in the study. The patients were divided into two groups randomly and double blind. Eighteen of these patients (test group) used a tablet of 7.5 mg meloxicam daily and other 15 patients (control group) used a placebo tablet daily along 4 weeks. Plaque index (PI), gingival index (GI), probing depth (PD), attachment level (AL) measurements were made for clinical evaluation of the patients. Also, GCF samples were collected from selected study areas of each patient by using standart paper strips. IL-1â and IL-1ra levels were evaluated by using commercial ELISA kit. Clinical measurements were repeated initially and at first month. Results:As a result of the study, the decrease in clinical parameters, PI, GI, PD and GCF IL-1ra levels were found statistically significant in test group (p<0.05). Decreasing of GCF IL-1â levels were not statistically significant (p>0.05). While decreasing of PI was statistically significant in control group (p<0.05), statistically significant changes were not determined in other clinical parameters and GCF cytokine levels (p>0.05). Conclusions:In this study, it was shown that 1 month period COX-2 inhibitor meloxicam application reduces gingival inflammation in CP patients. However, we thougth that selective COX-2 inhibitors have a limited effect in CP treatment. | ||
