Objective: The aim of the study was to evaluate the bite force of teeth with reduced periodontal tissue support as opposed to periodontally healthy teeth and to determine the correlation between the amount of periodontal tissue support and the amount of bite force. Methods: A total of 240 teeth participated in the study. The clinical examinations included probing pocket depth, clinical attachment level, gingival index. Teeth with dental fillings, crowns, bridges, root canal treatment and patients with temporamandibular joint disfunction sendrome were excluded . Periapical films from each teeth were taken to calculate the percentage of alveoler bone loss. Bite force measurements were performed using a straingauged bite fork which is a design of our own. Results: The experimental incisor group with an average of 71.75 % alveoler bone loss, had an average bite force of 3.83±2.39 kg, while the control group had 10.96 ± 3.09 kg. The experimental premolar group with an average of 64.5±13.97 % alveoler bone loss, had an average bite force of 6.32±3.72 kg , while the control group had 23.20±3.83 kg. The experimental molar group with an average of 55.65 ± 11.90 % alveoler bone loss, had an average bite force of 10.86 ± 4.12 kg, while the control group had 35.09 ± 9.77 kg. Discussion: The results of our study confirm the hypothesis that the teeth with greater periodontal ligament area have more bite force. The findings also revealed that reduced periodontal tissue support is in negative correlation with the amount of bite force. Conclusion: The results of the study proved that the ratio of bite force with reduced periodontal tissue support is twice that of complete dentures. Therefore it is more beneficial to retain teeth with periodontitis rather than extraction, in favour of chewing efficiency.
