Objectives: The aim of this study was to use panoramic radiographs to determine the vertical height of the alveolar bone. To minimize the errors of linear measurement, different measurement methods in different time intervals are applied. Methods: At the first step, the magnification factor which is important in determining the alveolar bone height is found by doing measurements on the panoramic radiographs of a scull. At the second step, alveolar bone height in certain regions is calculated as percentages by taking the ratios of the distances between certain anatomic points which are selected as reference points on the panoramic radiographs of 68 patients. Measurements which were made using give the best result, statistically, so all of the other measurements were made using grid. To determine the alveolar bone height from measurements, we derived the mean vertical magnification formula of the Trophy QP 100 Panoramic machine which we use in our clinic . The scores were statistically evaluated by using ANOVA and Chi- square tests. There were not any statistically significant differences between methods.(p ‹ 0.005). but it is difficult and not practical to find a mean magnification formula for panoramic machines with different magnification factors. Results: for this reason, we used the ratios of the distances between the reference anatomic points in the maxilla and the mandible, which are constant values, to measure the resorbed alveolar bone height as a percentage in that area. Conclusion: It is shown in our research that this is a useful method in evaluating the preoperative and postoperative alveolar bone height in surgical procedures such as implant placement, vestibuloplasty, tuberoplasty and tissue grafting.
