Objectives: Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a proinflammatory cytokine that mediates alveolar bone and extracelluler matrix degradation in periodontal disease. -174 G/C polymorphism of IL-6 gene has been reported to change IL-6 synthesis by affecting gene expression. The aim of the present study was to determine the distribution of –174 G/C polymorphism of IL-6 gene in Turkish population with aggressive periodontitis and chronic periodontitis and to investigate the association between genotype and fenotype. Methods: 61 patients with aggressive periodontitis, 52 patients with chronic periodontitis and 24 healthy subjects were included in this study.  The peripheral blood samples were analyzed for IL-6 -174 G/C polymorphism using PCR-RFLP. The differences in genotype and allele frequencies among the study groups were analyzed by Chi-square test. Results: The distribution of genotype and allele frequencies for the IL-6-174 polymorphism is shown in the following table. There were no significant differences in the genotype distribution and allele frequency for IL-6-174 polymorphism between healthy controls and periodontitis patients (P >0.05).

Conclusion: The present study suggests that –174 G/C polymorphism of IL-6 gene is not associated with susceptibility to aggressive periodontitis and chronic periodontitis in  Turkish population.
