Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of operator variability on the shear bond strength of a self-etching primer system (Clearfil SE Bond, Kuraray), and a one-bottle wet bonding system (Single Bond, 3M ESPE). Methods: The operators were; 1. Specialist in operative dentistry 2. Postgraduate student 3. Undergraduate student 4. General practioner. Flat dentin surfaces were created on 120 extracted human molars 2 mm above dentino-enamel junction. The bonding agents were applied on the flat dentinal surfaces according to manufacturer's instructions. Composite resins were applied to the surfaces in standart cylindirical shaped plastic matrixes and light cured. The specimens were stored in distilled water for 48 hours at 37 șC before testing. Shear bond testing was applied by using a stubby-shaped apparatus at a cross-head speed of 1.5 mm/min. Statistical analysis was carried out with Mann-Whitney U test and Kruskall Wallis test (P<0.05). Results: For SE Bond; Group 1: 54,41±15,59a , Group 2: 55,27±7,63a, Goup 3: 49,41±10,54ab, Group 4: 41,64±13,07b. For Single Bond; Group1: 28,59±10,34c, Group 2: 32,76±11,20c, Group 3: 17,54±5,57d, Group 4: 24,42±9,52cd (Groups identified with the same subscripts are not significantly different (p<0.05)). SE Bond showed higher bond strength than Single Bond in all groups. There was no significant difference for mean bond strengths between Group 1 and Group 2 for each adhesive system. The lowest bond strengths were obtained with Group 4 for SE bond and with Group 3 for Single Bond. The student's and general practioner's practical performance changed according to the bonding system they used. Conclusions: Experience of operator played an important role in obtaining optimal bonding performance from adhesive systems used in this study.
