BRIN1, 1 Hebrew University - Hadassah SDM, Jerusalem, Israel, 2 Hadassah Medical Center, Jerusalem, Israel The assessment of a possible relationship between orthopedic malformations and occlusal features may be of interest in diagnosis and treatment planning of specific malocclusions. Objectives: To clinically examine the occlusion of patients with idiopathic scoliosis. Subjects and Methods: The occlusion of 100 consecutive patients with idiopathic scoliosis was examined clinically. The results were compared with the occlusal status of a random group of Ashkenazi children which served as a control group (Ben-Bassat et al., 1997). Statistics: frequency distributions of the occlusal features in both groups were compared by the chi square test. Results: The distribution of the Angle's classes of malocclusion was significantly different in the two groups (p=0.0001), due to a large fraction of class II subdivision patients among the orthopedic patients. Other evidence of asymmetrical malocclusion was found in the upper (p=0.002) and lower midline deviation (p=0.0001), and higher frequency of anterior (p=0.022) and posterior (p=0.04) crossbites, respectively. Conclusion: Patients with idiopathic scoliosis present with different types of malocclusion compared to a random population. Early orthodontic screening for patients with asymmetric features of occlusion can take account for potential orthopedic malformations. | ||
