0226 Clinical Performance of a New Antibacterial Adhesive System at 18-months
L.S. TURKUN, Ege University School of Dentistry, Bornova, Izmir, Turkey

Objective: The purpose of this study is to compare the clinical performance of a new two bottle self-etch antibacterial adhesive and a one-step self-etch system over a period of 18-month in non-carious Class V lesions.

Methods: Thirty-five patients with non-carious cervical lesions were enrolled in the study. One hundred and sixty-three lesions were restored with a two-step self-etch adhesive Clearfil Protect Bond (Kuraray, Osaka, Japan) or a one-step self-etch system Xeno III (Dentsply DeTrey, Konstanz, Germany). Enamel margins were not beveled, and no mechanical retentions were placed. All lesions were restored with a micro-hybrid resin composite Esthet-X (Dentsply DeTrey, Germany). The restorations were evaluated at baseline, 3-6-9-12 and 18-month periods after placement using modified Ryge criteria for color stability, marginal discoloration, marginal adaptation, secondary caries, anatomic form, postoperative sensitivity and retention.

Results: The changes in the parameters during the 18-month period were assessed using Chi-square test at a significant level of 0.05. At 18-month, all restorations could be reviewed. The retention rates for Clearfil Protect Bond were 99% and 96% for Xeno III. Of the retained Xeno III restorations, 3% had marginal discoloration and slight anatomic form problems. For the Clearfil Protect Bond group, the problems were very minor. In both groups, color match was excellent and postoperative sensitivity was absent in all cases after 18-month.

Conclusion: The performance of both self-etch adhesives was excellent during this 18-month clinical trial in non-carious restorations without mechanical retention. However, Clearfil Protect Bond exhibited slightly better bond durability and had the advantage of having an antibacterial primer.

The companies of Kuraray and Dentsply DeTrey generously donated the adhesive systems and resin composites used in this study.
