| 0159 Comparison of Conventionally and Functionally Generated Occlusal Surfaces | ||

STRAWBRIDGE, University of Glasgow, United Kingdom Objective: To assess the fit and comfort of occlusal surfaces of interocclusal splints generated using the functionally generated technique compared to conventionally generated occlusal surfaces. Method: Two duplicates were made of upper and lower casts of 10 subjects. First or second duplicates were used for functional or conventional techniques randomly. Functional technique: Light cure acrylic was used to construct an axial matrix around the lower right second premolar. Additional acrylic was added over the occlusal surface, and this was then carved by functional movements of the subject's opposing teeth. This matrix was then poured to form an opposing functional index. After mounting on a hinge articulator, this was used to form an interocclusal wafer in self-cure acrylic. Conventional technique: upper casts were facebow mounted on a semi-adjustable articulator. Condylar angles were set and checked by protrusive and lateral interocclusal records. Lower casts were hand mounted, and an incisal guidance table constructed. A self-cure acrylic interocclusal wafer was constructed using articulator movements. Subjects blindly assessed functionally and conventionally constructed interocclusal acrylic wafers for comfort. Result: All 10 subjects reported the functionally generated interocclusal wafer as more comfortable. (Sign test, assumed probability of 0.5; p= 0.002) Conclusion: Functionally generated occlusal surfaces conform better to the movements of a subject's opposing dentition. | ||
