Bisphosphonates & Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (ONJ)

Description: Osteonecrosis of the jaws (ONJ) is commonly associated with bisphosphonate (BP) therapy in cancer patients. However, no casual link has been established. In addition, patients being treated for osteoporosis with BP have also developed ONJ. There is no animal model for this disease and there is limited information on the pathogenesis of ONJ. The purpose of this symposium is invite speaker to address what is the scientific evidence from humans and animal models on the pathogenesis of ONJ. The speakers will provide details of animal models and research methods to investigate ONJ. The aim is to educate and inform clinicians and researchers on the available knowledge base on ONJ Education objectives. Understand bone remodeling in the jaws as compared to appendicular sites Understand animal models for studying ONJ Understand unique features of the craniofacial region that may predispose them to ONJ.
