9:00 AM-10:30 AM Ernest N. Morial Convention Center 284, Symposium - Group/Division Sponsored
Susceptibility and Development of Periodontitis

Sponsored by: Microbiology / Immunology and Infection Control, Periodontal Research
Description: Although it is clear that bacteria are the cause of periodontal diseases, the disease phenotype is influenced by environmental, genetic and host-response factors. This symposium will provide cutting edge knowledge on the issue of susceptibility for periodontitis and will give an update on the status of translational research aiming at the development of tools to identify susceptibility. The first talk will focus on common genetic variations, or polymorphisms, that affect the transcription or translation of proteins involved in inflammation or in the development or maintenance of the periodontal tissues, will review evidence for a genetic basis of aggressive and chronic periodontitis, will summarize genetic epidemiological findings to date, and will explore new approaches for identifying and applying genetic information. The second talk will review the use of molecular tools such as 16S rRNA-based PCR, hybridization assays and Human Oral Microbe Identification Microarrays in the study of the role of bacterial species in oral infectious diseases and in systemic diseases associated with oral bacteria. The third talk will focus on the immunoregulatory control of the host response in periodontitis, in particular on the so-called Th1/Th2 paradigm, will review the mechanisms controlling Th1 and Th2 responses and will discuss the role of T cells in maintaining homeostasis. The clinical implications of the research findings will be discussed.
