| Micronutrition, periodontitis and systemic diseases – potential mechanistic links | ||||||||||||||||||||
Sponsored by: Nutrition, Periodontal Research | ||||||||||||||||||||
| Description: This symposium is a unique proposal to explore the mechanistic links between micronutrients, inflammatory periodontitis and associated systemic conditions. As evidence increases for strong associations between systemic conditions such as type-2 diabetes, obesity, pre-eclampsia, cardiovascular disease and periodontitis, and as evidence also builds for a role for antioxidant depletion and increased oxidative stress underpinning key destructive processes in periodontitis, it is timely to debate and discuss such cutting edge issues. This symposium aims to build upon the success of the first joint symposium between the Periodontal and Nutrition Research Groups of IADR held in San Diego 2002, to help generate even greater understanding of the exciting potential routes for developing novel host-modulating therapies that have a nutritional basis and which will significantly improve the management of periodontal and associated systemic diseases in the future. It is hoped that the symposium will provide greater understanding of, and a consensus on, key mechanisms that underpin the role of micronutrients in modulating host inflammatory-immune and healing responses, both at the gene transcription and cell signalling pathway levels. This in turn will help guide the direction of future research into host modulating therapies, which have a nutritional basis to their design. | ||||||||||||||||||||
