Methodological Issues in Measuring Oral Health Related Quality of Life in Children

Sponsored by: Behavioral Sciences
Description: Oral health related quality of life (OHRQOL) concerns the impact of oral health on social and psychological well-being and on daily functioning. OHRQOL assessment in children is important in health services research because when combined with clinical data, it provides a more complete picture of a child’s oral health. Further, these assessments can be used as outcome measures to detect changes in health status associated with treatment, for assessing the impact of oral health in populations, and as a tool for evaluating health disparities in the general population and in at-risk populations. Developing measures to assess OHRQOL in children presents unique challenges and several methodological issues need to be considered. The first concerns developmental changes that take place in children as they age and the impact of these changes on the design of the instrument and choice of question content. Other issues concerns the development of a conceptual model to measure OHRQOL in children; the advantages and disadvantages of parental versus child assessments; and, issues associated with the translation of the measure from one language to another. This symposium will present these challenges and conclude with a discussion of future directions in assessing OHRQOL and their applications in eliminating oral health disparities. This symposium is aimed at all investigators interested in oral health disparities and the relationship between oral health and general health.
