| The Impact of Hurricane Katrina on Oral Medicine and Pathology in New Orleans | ||||||||||||||||||||
Sponsored by: Oral Medicine & Pathology | ||||||||||||||||||||
| Description: Hurricane Katrina had a devastating effect on the New Orleans area as well as many aspects of Health Care and Biomedical Research being conducted at the LSU Health Sciences Center and Tulane University Medical Center. The symposium will describe several aspects of how Katrina affected basic science and clinical oral medicine research in the medical center district, the cohorts for clinical research, care and translational research in head and neck cancer, and oral pathology and forensic services. This symposium will be of interest to almost any type of investigator or dental clinician who has an interest in how a natural disaster can impact research and health care services in an academic setting. From the symposium we hope to inform and educate investigators and dental clinians as to how a natural disaster of this magnitude can virtually stymie research and patient care for an extended period of time together with recovery efforts and solutions to reduce the impact in future disasters. Each presentation will review the status of the field pre-Katrina, what occurred immediately post-Katrina, the long-term impact of the storm, and the lessons learned and solutions from the fallout. | ||||||||||||||||||||
