| Gender Effects on Temporomandibular Disorders | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
Sponsored by: Craniofacial Biology, Neuroscience / TMJ | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Description: Pain and degenerative changes in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) afflict thousands of people, many of them females in their child-bearing years. Clinical management of these conditions is often challenging, and the development of suitable animal models has proven difficult. Although gender is generally presumed to play a role, the interaction of gender with TMJ pain and degenerative conditions is not well understood. The objective of this symposium is to bring together four leading researchers in this area, two who are primarily clinical in orientation and two who are performing animal research pertinent to this theme. The two clinical speakers will outline what is known of relationships between gender and TMJ pain as well as limitations and difficulties of performing studies in human patients. A third speaker will present a novel animal model for assessing the role of estrogen in TMJ pain/ inflammation via precise measurement of food intake patterns. The final speaker will discuss the role of relaxin, beta-estradiol, and progesterone on glycosaminoglycan and collagen content of the articular disc fibrocartilage. Because of widespread interest in this topic, we anticipate that these presentations will be of interest to a broad spectrum of attendees at the IADR meeting. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
