9:00 AM-10:30 AM Ernest N. Morial Convention Center 284, Symposium - Group/Division Sponsored
Frail Older Adults, Dementia and the Failing Dentition

Sponsored by: Geriatric Oral Research, Nutrition, Prosthodontics Research
Description: Cross-sectional & longitudinal international oral epidemiological & conditions in the ever-increasing numbers of dentate & edentulous frail older adults, especially those with dementia. Studies have evidenced: (1) decreased use of dentures & possible successful use of implants; (2) increased denture-related oral mucosal lesions; (3) high & rampant levels of coronal & root caries; (4) high levels of retained tooth roots; (5) very high levels of plaque accumulation and related prevalence of aspiration pneumonia, & (6) associations of these conditions with older adults with weight loss and carer burden. In addition, at the 2006 Brisbane IADR meeting the Geriatric Oral Research Group held a symposium and a 2-day Science Transfer Program in collaboration with the WHO to develop an international research agenda in Geriatric Oral Research. The proposed symposium for 2007 New Orleans IADR meeting will build upon the research agenda that is in final development and supplement information in the important area of frail older adults, dementia & the failing dentition. This symposium will be published as a literature review of Frail Older Adults, Dementia and the Failing Dentition, to be coauthored by all presenters and contributors. A presenter from each region will critically review and summarise the studies from their countries, describing the data published in each of the following areas, and how the data contributes to the understanding of the onset and progression of oral diseases and conditions in frail older adults, especially those with dementia: (1) dentures and implants; (2) oral mucosal lesions; (3) coronal and root caries; and (4) plaque accumulation and periodontal diseases. Any studies investigating the relationship among nutrition, carers, oral hygiene care and residential status (eg., community-living, hospital, nursing home) will also be critically reviewed.
