Sponsored by: Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Pharmacology, Therapeutics, & Toxicology, ADEA Sections - 1. Physiology, Pharmacology, and Therapeutics 2. Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery/ Anesthesia 3. Oral Medicine | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Description: Bisphosphonate medications have become a standard treatment for metastatic disease spread to bone from breast, lung, and prostate cancer as well as in treatment of multiple myeloma and treatment and prevention of osteoporosis. They are currently being investigated in a variety of studies for their inhibition of osteoclast mediated bone resorption. Comprehensive knowledge regarding the pharmacologic actions of bisphosphonates, their clinical use and their possible long term oral complications such as bisphosphonate associated osteonecrosis, will benefit all clinicians and investigators. The symposia will review the physiologic mechanism of action of bisphosphonate medications including their pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics and discuss current therapeutic uses. It will explore the patient populations which receive these medications and the beneficial effects which they receive, as well as the possible long term side effect of bisphosphonate associated osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ). The current risk factors associated with the complication will be emphasized. The management of patients with osteonecrosis of the mandible will be debated and current and future investigations using bisphosphonates to treat oral conditions and disease will be discussed. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
