9:00 AM-10:30 AM Ernest N. Morial Convention Center 298, Hands-on Workshop
Oral Pathogen Sequence Analysis and Comparative Study
Description: This tutorial will provide an introduction to genome level sequence analysis and an overview of the NIDCR-funded Oralgen database, as well as JGI/IMG and other commonly used bioinformatics tools. It will include a perspective on the many challenges remaining in the field and how some of them can be addressed with these tools and techniques. Examples to be presented include comparative analysis, illustrated by reductive pathway evolution and paralog emergence for new function. Subsystem annotation will be demonstrated by using metabolic reconstruction and identification of missing genes. The tutorial will provide the participants with adequate knowledge of the available tools, websites and databases to perform effective manual curation and comparative analysis. The format will be hands-on and the instructors are experienced sequence analysts from the Oralgen Database Team. Participants need a working knowledge at the advanced undergraduate level of microbiology, cell biology, biochemistry and molecular biology. Scientists who are NIDCR grant awardees are encouraged to attend, but the workshop is open to all.
