10:30 AM-12:00 PM Ernest N. Morial Convention Center 299, Hands-on Workshop
Technology Support for Teaching Clinical Decision-making

Sponsored by: Education Research, Evidence-based Dentistry Network
Description: In order to maintain standards-of-care practitioners must use current research as a framework in which to evaluate patient information and make diagnostic and treatment decisions. However, few instructional materials exist to assist dental educators to teach students how to find, evaluate and apply research as they make decisions regarding the care of their patients. This Workshop will demonstrate two Web-based simulation programs that support individual and small group investigation and application of patient care decision-making using current research. Development of each of these programs is funded by the NIDCR. Each program requires students to apply “research skills”, e.g., formulate an answerable question, search numerous and varied information sources, evaluate the credibility, validity, and clinical relevance of the resulting information and then apply the resulting information to the simulated patients. Two programs will be demonstrated. The first requires students to apply these strategies to the rapidly changing domain of dental genetics. While the second program covers a series of oral health care issues, a case of an elderly patient with caries will be demonstrated. Participants will develop an initial “Action Plan” to implement clinical decision-making into their curriculum using Web-based simulations.
