Objective: was to evaluate the results obtained for the municipality of São Sebastião, SP, regarding oral health indicators after implantation of oral health teams (OHT) working together with teams of the Family Health Program (FHP). Methods:epidemiological indices of oral health obtained for the municipality between 2001 and 2004 and provided by Datasus were used for the study. The decision to reorient the intervention practices in oral health in this municipality was based on the need to improve the implementation of the FHP principles regarding health promotion, protection and recovery of the assisted population. Results:the following results can be emphasized: an increase in the access rate to first dental care from 30.58 in 2001 to 35.68 in 2003; an increase in collective procedures among the 0-14 year population of this municipality from 20.02 in 2000 to 67.07 in 2003 after implantation of the OHT; an increase in the number of collective dental procedures performed in the municipality from 140,596 in 2001 to 163,032 in 2003, and increase in the number of dental care visits between 2000 and 2004 which was 66,703 in 2000, reaching 345,931 in 2004. Implantation of the OHT also stimulated the development of basic dental actions performed in the municipality of São Sebastião, which increased from 57,459 in 2000 to 331,823 in 2003. Conclusions: the extremely positive results obtained in the present study demonstrate the importance of the active participation of health professionals and of the proactive participation of the population in the decision-making process of the work to be developed. Basic oral health care can improve the quality of life of the community and help strengthen the public health system.
