F.B. ANDRADE1, A.F. CALDAS JUNIOR1, and P. KITOKO2, 1University of Pernambuco, Vitoria, Brazil, 2Salesiana Faculty of Vitoria, Brazil

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the relation between oral health and nutritional status among non-institutionalized elderly people.

Methods: The sample comprised 144 elderly persons aged 60 and over, from Vitória-ES, Brazil.

Methods: Patients underwent a clinical examination and answered a personal data form. The nutritional status was determined using the Body Mass Index (BMI) witch cuts offs were set for elderly people. The agreement between examiners was achieved using the Kappa index, that ranged from 0,72 to 0,89.

Results: The results showed that there was a prevalence of women (63%) and age ranged from 60 to 96 (mean 71.91). It was observed a high DMFT index (mean 27.47) with a prevalence of lost teeth (mean 24.74). In relation to the BMI it was observed that 10.1% were underweight and 42.8% were overweight. No Significant differences were found between between oral health condition and BMI, but it was observed a linear tendency suggesting that edentulous people had high risk to be overweight (odds 1.32).

Conclusion: It was concluded that oral health wasn't related to nutritional status among elderly, but the numbers suggest that it might be possible to establish a relation when considering a representative sample.
