Effect of cleansers on the primary root dentin permeability

Objective:To evaluate the effects of cleansers, instrumentation auxiliaries and chelating agents on the permeability index (PI) in primary root dentin.

Methods: Forty-two extracted roots were selected and distributed according to the cleansers: 5.25% Sodium Hypochlorite(H), 5.25% Sodium Hypochlorite + 17% EDTA (SE), 2% Chlorexidine gelŠ, 2% Chlorexidine gel + 17% EDTA (CE) and Saline solution (S). The canals were manually instrumented and irrigation was performed manually. The roots were impermeabilized, filled with 2% methylene blue solution, washed and longitudinally sectioned. The halves were marked in thirds (cervical, middle, apical) and the areas of dye penetration were measured. The PI was determined as follow: dye penetration area x 100/total root dentin area. PI data were submitted to factorial ANOVA and t tests (p< 0,05).

Results: None of agents induced difference in PI in the all thirds (p< 0,05). Regarding to each third, statistically significant differences were observed for cervical and apical thirds in CE (p= 0.0027) and S (p= 0.038) groups. For H group differences were found between cervical and apical thirds (p= 0.0008) and middle and apical thirds (p=0.0003).

Conclusion: Treatments 5.25% Sodium Hypochlorite, 5.25% Sodium Hypochlorite + 17% EDTA, 2% Chlorexidine gel, 2% Chlorexidine gel + 17% EDTA, 17% EDTA and Saline Solution cleansers showed similar PIs, suggesting that these cleansers can be recommended for primary teeth.
