L.C. VERGARA, L.A. DELGADO, and L.Y. TAY CHU-JON, Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia - Facultad de Estomatologia, Lima, Peru

Objective: To compare the effectiveness of in-office bleaching with combined bleaching. Methods: Ten subjects (5 men and 5 women), without structural alterations in their anterosuperior teeth and tooth colour equal or greater to A2 (VITA scale), were included voluntarily in the study. All the patients signed a written consent which was approved by the ethics committee of the “Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia”. 35% hydrogen peroxide (Whiteness® HP / FGM Productos Odontológicos / Brasil) was used as in-office bleaching and 10% carbamide peroxide (Nite White® ACP/Discus Dental/ USA) was used for the combined technique. Bleaching treatments consisted of three consecutive days of application. The colour variation was registered during the 3 days and its stability 5, 10 and 15 days after finalized the treatment. Friedman test was used to compare the colour with respect to evaluation time and Wilcoxon test was used to determine which days presented any significant differences. U-Mann Whitney test was used to compare the resultant colour between both techniques. Results: An average colour variation of 7 degrees for both techniques in the treatment phase (p<0.05) was found. Colour relapse of 1 degree to the 5 days after finalized (p<0.05) was found. The colour remained stable between day 10 and 15 of evaluation. No differences between the used techniques was found (p>0.05). Conclusions: Both techniques are effective in bleaching vital teeth. Colour relapse was present at the 5 days after treatment on both techniques.
