W.-J. SHE, and F.-Q. ZHANG, School of Medicine, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China Objective: Silver-zirconate(SZ) had broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. It reported that they could be incorporated into medical materials for preventing pathgens' infection. Denture base resins made of Poly(methyl methyacrylate)(PMMA)had special physical and chemical properties, which provide facility for bacteria and fungi colonizing on them. In this study, we applied SZ into PMMA and explored the influence of SZ on antimicrobial and mechanical properties of PMMA. Methods: The experimental groups were PMMA(#1, Shanghai Dental Products CO.,China) mixed with SZ( FUMAT T200-4,Bona Weilai CO., China), whose incorporating doses were 1%,2%,3%,4%,5%,7%,10% respectively. The control group was PMMA without SZ. Antimicrobial properties against Streptococcus mutans or Candida albicans were assayed with the pellicle-sticking method. Mechanical properties such as deflection, flexure strength, flexure modulus, impact strength were measured according to the international standards. Results: The inhibition percentions for Streptococcus mutans of each experimental group(1%,2%,3%,4%,5%,7%,10%)were 24.5%,73.3%,80.2%,87.2%,90.7%,96.5%,100% .And those of Candida albicans were 26.3%,46.7%,53.3%,63.1%,69.9%,73.2%,79.8%. So the antimicrobial properties of PMMA were strengthened with the increasing doses of SZ. However the mechanical properties of PMMA changed partially. when the incorporating dose of SZ reached 1% , the impact strength of the experimental group decreased to 7.05 KJ/m2 , which was significantly less than control group (10.01 KJ/m2 ) . For 4% experimental group , the flexure strength decreased to 95.96 Mpa , significantly less than control group (108.14 Mpa). For 5% experimental group, the flexure modulus increased to 2594.00 MPa, significantly more than control group (2533.60 MPa) .However the deflection didn''t change. Conclusion: PMMA incorporated with SZ had good antimicrobial properties. But the incorporating dose of SZ must be controlled reasonably in order to minish the influence on the mechanical properties of PMMA. | ||
