MISRA2, 1Los Alamos National Laboratory, NM, USA, 2Los Alamos National Laboratory, CA, USA The Oral Pathogen Genome Sequence Database (ORALGEN) is funded by the National Institute of Craniofacial and Dental Research (NIDCR) of NIH. Objective: It is a specialized sequence database managed at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in support of oral pathogen research. Methods: The database currently encompasses primary and derived molecular sequence data for Porphyromonas gingivalis, Prevotella intermedia, Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans, Fusobacterium nucleatum, Streptococcus mutans, Treponema denticola, Tannerella forsythensis and related organisms such as Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron, Cytophaga hutchinsonii and several herpesviruses. Results: In addition to tracking molecular sequences and the relevant literature, Oralgen performs basic analyses to facilitate research; interacts with the research community through attendance at major meetings; assists individual researchers; and publishes a Web site consisting of a relational database, tables of basic information, and mini-reviews and serves as a training center in bioinformatics. In the last two years, Oralgen has been able to couple its work with the DOE/JGI, thereby sharing bioinformatics expertise in a synergistic way. Conclusions: Besides the mainstream work of cataloging and analyzing genomic sequences (of which six or more are expected), Oralgen plans to place the new oral community metagenome sequence data into a useable database form. The ultimate goal is to provide a comprehensive resource with regard to molecular data of oral pathogens and to present value-added sequence records for which compilation and analysis go hand-in-hand. A specific goal of Oralgen in 2007 is to foster more collaborative relationships among dental researchers from academia and industry. | ||
