C.-C. TSAI, Y.-H. YANG, and L.-J. CHIOU, Kaohsiung Medical University, Taiwan Objectives: Psychosocial factors and life style have been suggested as potential risk factors for periodontal disease. This study especially concerned the smking habits on the interference with other risk factors for periodontal status. Method: A total of 1389 civilian non-institutional Taiwanese individuals were interviewed regarding their social economic status, psychosocial factor (CHQ-12), and smoking habits. The periodontal examination included CPI (community periodontal index) and LOA (loss of attachment). Result: Logistic regression analysis indicated that participants of CHQ-12 score >6 had a significantly higher odds ratio (OR) of LOA 2-4 than other persons (smokers OR=7.60; non-smokers OR=3.16). Among non-smokers, significantly higher OR for poor periodontal status was observed in the following: married and divorced/widowed (CPI3-4 OR= 15.50 and 46.14, LOA2-4 OR =22.08 and 16.19); in low and medium levels of household income (CPI3-4 OR = 11.37 and 7.78, LOA 2-4 OR= 15.51 and 9.61); and in upper white collar and professional strata (CPI3-4 OR = 6.9, LOA 2-4 OR= 6.55). Among smokers, those with elementary school education had CPI3-4 OR of 10.83, and those of lower than elementary school education level had LOA2-4 OR of 18.62. Conclusion: Psychosocial factors had effect on periodontal status in both non-smokers and smokers, especially in smokers. | ||
