| [AADR] The Tumor Microenvironment in Cancer Progression | ||||||||||||||||||||
Sponsored by: Oral Medicine & Pathology | ||||||||||||||||||||
| Description: It is now clear that the tumor microenvironment plays an essential role in all stages of cancer progression. Research has shown cancer cells demonstrate complex cross-talk with host tissues including immune, inflammatory, vascular, epithelial cells and their surrounding stroma. In this light, cancer development is dependent on reciprocal interactions that are regulated by the manner in which tumor cells communicate with neighboring cells (cell-cell interactions), with adjacent stroma (extracellular matrix interactions) and through soluble growth factors. The goal of this symposium is to provide an overview and update on studies in these experimental, tissue-based paradigms that have been found to directly implicate the tumor microenvironment in cancer development. This will be accomplished through three presentations that will describe recently-discovered mechanisms through which early and advanced stages of carcinoma and melanoma are controlled by signals from the tumor microenvironment. This symposium is aimed to a broad spectrum of scientists. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of this field, it is hoped that both clinical and basic science researchers will attend. This symposium will generate an awareness of this emerging area of cancer biology and is directed to junior, as well as seasoned investigators.
