| [AADR] Inflammation, Wound Healing, and Scar Formation | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
Sponsored by: Microbiology / Immunology and Infection Control | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Description: Many recent studies support the concept that the inflammatory response in wounds modulates subsequent healing and scar formation. Interestingly, studies of oral mucosal wounds, a site that heals rapidly and with minimal scar formation, have proved highly useful in establishing how inflammation affects the healing process. Likewise, investigations into the etiology of excessive scar formation, such as that seen in hypertrophic scars and keloids, have also shed light on the link between inflammation and healing. An emerging paradigm suggests that ideal wound healing requires the precise regulation of inflammation. This symposium will explore the following questions on the subject of inflammation, healing, and scar formation: 1) Does inflammation differ in oral mucosal and skin wounds? 2) How does stress, as a negative modulator of healing, perturb wound inflammation? 3) What is the influence of integrin expression on scar formation? 4) What other factors mediate pathologic scar formation? This symposium will target dental students, post-graduate students, dentists, dentist-scientists, and scientists who wish to expand their knowledge of contemporary concepts in inflammation and healing. Symposium participants will become conversant with novel findings in the field, and will learn how therapeutic modulation of wound inflammation might be used to modify healing outcomes in the clinical setting | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
