| 0460 Age and Age/Sex Adjustment Tables for Oral Health Data Reporting | ||

KINGMAN, Natl Institute of Dental & Craniofacial Rsch - NIDCR, Bethesda, MD, USA Objectives: This report presents age and age/sex distributions and weights used in the recent CDC MMWR Surveillance Summary, “Surveillance for Dental Caries, Dental Sealants, Tooth Retention, Edentulism and Enamel Fluorosis – United States, 1988-1994 and 1999-2002” (2005). The second National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) sponsored workshop on age adjustment recommended use of a single standard population for age adjustment in official publications of data by Federal agencies. NCHS later published a set of age distributions with weights, established the projected 2000 population as the standard population, and described methodology for developing additional distributions. As several measures of oral health status vary by age and sex, additional distributions are needed for direct standardization of oral health data. Methods: Following the NCHS example, age and age/sex distribution tables were prepared. Weights were rounded to 6 decimals; if weights did not sum to 1 due to rounding, small adjustments were made so that weights summed to 1. The populations were drawn from the U.S. Census Population projections cited in the NCHS recommendations (available at http://www.census.gov/prod/1/pop/p25-1130/). Results: Eight distributions were prepared - one age distribution and one age/sex distribution for each of 4 populations: young children (ages 2 to 11), children and adolescents (ages 6 to 19), adults (ages 20 and older), and the population targeted for the fluorosis examination (ages 6 to 39). The distribution for adults used 10-year age groups; the rest were by single years of age. Conclusions: This report documents the age and age/sex standardization weights used in the recent MMWR and provides an example in an oral health context for developing age/sex distributions. These distributions may be used for further analyses of oral health data from NHANES or other data systems to provide estimates that are more comparable across publications and data systems. | ||
