Objectives: To describe the dental care treatment needs of pregnant women enrolled in a clinical trial in central Mississippi.

Methods: Dental exams including radiographs were performed on 181 women who enrolled in a clinical trial during their second trimester. Decayed and filled tooth surfaces (DFS), missing teeth (MT) and teeth with periapical lesions were counted. Treatment plan procedures excluded orthodontic and periodontal care and were categorized as essential (i.e. needed to control pain or infection during pregnancy) or as post-partum when not urgent. Treatment plans included extractions, simple restorations, endodontics and complex restorations. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, linear regression analysis and ANOVA.

Results: Mean age (sd) was 25.2 (5.1) years. 80.7% received public assistance. 82.9% were Black, 17.7% Caucasian, and 0.6% Native American. 23% had no dental care for more than 5 years. Mean DMFS was 20.1 (14.3). Subjects receiving public assistance (p=0.03) and those with 8 or less years of education (p=0.008) had more MT than those not receiving assistance or with more education. Essential care was planned for 62.4% and post-partum care for 84.5%. 9.9% had no treatment needs. Of subjects requiring essential care, 45.8% needed extractions, 32.0% simple restorations, 11.6% endodontic therapy and 1.1% complex restorations. Of those requiring post-partum care, 18.8% needed extractions, 82.9% simple restorations, 1.7% endodontic therapy and 18.8% complex restorations.

Conclusions: This group of pregnant women has high caries experience and urgent dental treatment needs.
