NAKAJIMA, Meikai University, Saitama, Japan Objective: The quantity of Si-O-Si siloxane bands is reported in FTIR studies to increase on primed ceramic surfaces prior to resin bonding procedures. To investigate optimum repair conditions, this study examined the effect on FTIR spectra of heating ceramic tooth surfaces primed with adhesive resin repair systems. Methods: Four brands of adhesive resin repair systems for ceramics were used [Single Bond (3M), A1; Cera-Resin Bond (Shofu), A2; One-up Bond (Tokuyama), B1; and Mega Bond (Kuraray), B2]. Repair systems A1 and A2 are one-bottle priming systems, and systems B1 and B2 are two-bottle priming systems, in which one component is an activator and the other is a primer for the ceramic surface. The ceramic tooth surface was treated with the primer according to each manufacturer's instructions. Another ceramic tooth specimen was prepared, primed and heated at 150°C for 10 min to obtain a further activated primed surface. The surfaces of the ceramic teeth (n=3) were examined by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometry (FTIR) after application of the primer. The Si-O-Si/C-O-Si band peak intensity ratio was determined. Results: The peak intensity ratios for unheated specimens were 1.4±0.1 for A1, 1.7±0.1 for A2, 1.9±0.3 for B1, and 1.8±0.1 for B2. The specimens heated for 10 minutes had ratios of 1.8±0.1 for A1, 2.3±0.1 for A2, 1.9±0.2 for B1 and 1.8±0.1 for B2. Heating the primed ceramic surfaces significantly increased (ANOVA/Scheffè's test, p<0.05) the peak intensity ratio with the one-bottle priming system; however, there were no statistical differences in the peak intensity ratio for specimens primed with the two-bottle system (p>0.05). Conclusion: To optimize the effectiveness of adhesive ceramic repair systems, further activation of the primed ceramic surface by heating increased the Si-O-Si siloxane bands on the ceramic tooth when a priming system without an activator was used. | ||
