0325 Compatibility of a Self-Etch Self-Adhering Resin-Cement with One-Bottle Adhesive Systems
H. BUI, X. QIAN, D. TOBIA, and E. SHELLARD, Kerr Corporation, Orange, CA, USA

Many one-bottle adhesives are not quite compatible with self-cured resin cements, resulting in compromised adhesion.  A self-etch/self-adhering resin cement Maxcem (MAX, Kerr) was recently introduced for much simplified (or single-step) cementation procedure.  Objective: to test the dentin shear bond strength (SBS) of several commercial one-bottle adhesives {Prime&Bond NT (PBNT, Dentsply), Excite (Vivadent); Optibond Solo Plus (OBSP, Kerr)} using either (i) each adhesive's own cement (Calibra, Variolink, Nexus) or (ii) MAX in self-cure mode.  Methods: Dentin SBS test was conducted using a bonding jig (Ultradent) with cylindrical mold (D=2.38mm).  Each adhesive was light-cured, and each cement was self-cured. Both PBNT and OBSP adhesives were used without their respective activators for the purpose of truly assessing the degree of incompatibility.  The bonded specimens (n=6) were stored in de-ionized water at 37°C for 24 hours before being subjected to shear force on an Instron mechanical tester.   Results: t-test revealed that, for all three adhesives, the SBS obtained with MAX was significantly (p < 0.01) higher than those obtained with each adhesive's own cement.   Severe incompatibility existed between PBNT (without activator) and Calibra, resulting in no bond strength as a result of poor curing of the cement in contact with adhesive.  OBSP yielded the highest SBS among three adhesives regardless whether EXP or each adhesive's own cement was used.

Conclusions: The self-etch/self-adhering resin cement (Maxcem) exhibited much better compatibility or improved SBS with all three adhesives when compared with their own cements.
