| Tobacco and Oral Health: Updates on Health Effects, Predictors, and Interventions | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
Sponsored by: Behavioral Sciences, IADR ad hoc Committee on Tobacco | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Description: Tobacco use has major impacts on oral health and general health, and dental settings may be ideal venues for tobacco use interventions. This symposium highlights some of the latest findings on oral health effects of tobacco use, recent studies of oral health-related predictors of tobacco use, and research on effective dental office-based tobacco cessation programs. The presentations are applicable to researchers, clinicians, and dental educators. The first speaker will present findings from a study conducted among 8th grade students in South Africa, suggesting that attitudes toward oral health may be associated with adolescent tobacco use. The second presentation will highlight findings from a recent case-control study in Japan, which found that secondhand tobacco smoke from parents’ cigarette smoking may increase the risk for gingival pigmentation in their children. The third speaker will present results from a recent tobacco cessation study conducted in a dysplasia clinic, suggesting such clinics may be appropriate settings for effective interventions. The final presentation will review a number of studies done by the presenter that have used different modes of training dentists and dental hygienists to counsel patients to quit tobacco, and will offer suggestions for dissemination and diffusion of best practices for providing tobacco cessation in the context of oral health care | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
