| Remineralization of White-spot Lesions: Scientific Evidence | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
Sponsored by: Cariology Research, Diagnostic Systems | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Description: Dental caries remains a major public health problem in most communities even though the prevalence of disease has reduced since the introduction of fluorides. The focus in caries research has recently shifted to the development of methodologies for the detection of early caries lesions and the reversal of these lesions by remineralisation. The non-invasive treatment of early caries lesions by remineralisation has the potential to be a major advance in the clinical management of the disease. The major purpose of the symposium is to determine the scientific evidence to support a role for various remineralisation systems in the non-invasive treatment of early caries lesions. This symposium involves the global leaders in remineralisation from the USA, Europe, Japan and Australia who will review the scientific evidence for remineralisation of early caries lesions. The focus of the scientific presentations and the presenters will be as follows: (1) The continuum of dental caries--evidence for a dynamic disease process by John D Featherstone (USA); (2) Remineralization of caries lesions extending into dentin by JM (Bob) ten Cate (the Netherlands); (3) Early detection of white spot lesions and remineralization with acid-resistant mineral by Youichi Iijima (Japan); (4) New remineralization systems: Scientific evidence? By Eric C Reynolds (Australia); and (5) Discussion: Is there a clinical role for remineralization systems in the non-invasive treatment of white spot lesions? There will be time designated for open discussion after each presentation and at the conclusion of the symposium. The program is supported by Cadbury Schweppes Americas, GC Corporation, and CRC for Oral Health Science. Chairpersons/Moderators: Jack Vincent, John Brown | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
