| Neuropathic Orofacial Pain: from Basic Science to Clinical Management | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Sponsored by: Neuroscience / TMJ, Pharmacology, Therapeutics, & Toxicology, Int'l Consortium for RDC/TMD-based Research | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Description: Neuropathic orofacial pain is a serious form of pain often encountered in the dental office and in specialist pain clinics and is more common than is generally appreciated. The dentist is most likely to have first contact with patients who have neuropathic orofacial pain, and dental treatments themselves have been implicated as a cause of the condition. Neuropathic orofacial pain often becomes chronic and results in significant suffering and impairment of quality of life. Although major advances have been made in the basic understanding of the pain process at the molecular and cellular level, the diagnosis and management of neuropathic orofacial pain remains difficult and it is not uncommon for patients to receive inappropriate treatment that exacerbates the condition. This symposium seeks to: 1) provide an overview of neuropathic pain, 2) describe current basic science aspects of neuropathic orofacial pain and clinical correlates, 3) present current methods of neuropathic orofacial pain assessment, and 4) describe current evidence-based approaches to clinical management | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
