| Description: The symposium will focus on how the immune system responds to various pathogens that cause oral diseases/infections. The oral mucosa is susceptible to several types of diseases/infections/syndromes in both immunocompetent individuals and immunocompromised individuals (i.e., HIV infection, cancer chemotherapy). Mucosal immunology has become a highly significant topic with substantial compartmentalization and independence at specific sites. The oral mucosa is no different. Accordingly, pathogens may be responded to differently at the oral mucosa and different than at other mucosal sites. This is due to the presence or absence of innate or adaptive immune mechanisms, and the specific components of each that are responding. There is also the issue of the delicate balance between responsiveness and tolerance toward organisms that are considered commensal. The purpose of the symposium is to compare and contrast how the host responds to prokaryotic, eukaryotic, and viral oral pathogens as a means to understand the breadth of the immune system against each type of pathogen. The symposium will cover four pathogens that cause oral diseases/infections with presentations given by experts in the various fields. One presentation will be on host defense against Candida albicans, the causative agent of oral candidiasis (thrush) that will include both innate and adaptive immune mechanisms. A second presentation will be on the signaling mechanisms associated with host defense to Porphorymonas gingivalis, that causes periodontitis. A third presentation will be on innate host defense against human papillomavirus, the causative agent of oral warts. The fourth presentation will be on host defense against oral viridans streptococci that plays a large role in the development of caries.
