| Frontiers in Oral Microbiology - Interactions within Communities | ||||||||||||||||||||
Sponsored by: Microbiology / Immunology and Infection Control, Periodontal Research | ||||||||||||||||||||
| Description: Several diseases of the oral cavity are correlated with polymicrobial infections. The importance of interbacterial interactions in the conversion of commensal communities to pathogenic infections is under debate, while treatment strategies targeting particular periodontal pathogens have been called into question. The speakers will address the role of interbacterial interactions in the development supragingival and of subgingival plaque using data from human subjects. Molecular characterization of the metabolic potential of these communities will be presented, and data from in vitro model systems will be offered as an approach to laboratory-based study of interactions. The symposium will define the community perspective in oral microbiology; familiarity with basic oral microbiology is useful but not necessary.
