Development of Oral Mucosal Immune Responses: Role in Health and Disease

Sponsored by: Microbiology / Immunology and Infection Control, Periodontal Research
Description: This symposium will bring together experts in the field of immunology, oral mucosal immunology, oral microbiology and osteoimmunology, with particular emphasis on the role of the oral mucosal immune response in periodontal disease. The potential immunotherapeutic approaches to this and other diseases that involve soft- and/or hard- tissue destruction will be discussed. This symposium is directed at a broad range of investigators, from the dental student, through the PhD candidate, to the post-doctoral fellow and the seasoned faculty member. The purpose of this symposium is to reach some consensus on the role of innate and adaptive immune responses in the development of oral mucosal immune responses and in periodontal diseases, in relation to other immune-mediated diseases (e.g. Crohn’s disease/ulcerative colitis, rheumatoid arthritis, asthma). It is anticipated that the symposium will identify major gaps in our understanding of the role of innate and adaptive immune responses in health and disease. This workshop will cover the phenotype and functions of monocytes/macrophages, dendritic cell subsets, T cell subsets and their progenitors and the mediators that activate or suppress their functions. Particular emphasis will be placed on regulatory/toleragenic responses and on mediators of osteoclastic bone destruction
