Y.-S. KIM, S.-B. HAN, H.-M. KIM, and Y.-J. LIM, Seoul National University, South Korea Objectives: The most important characteristics in osseointegrated implants (OI) are non-mobility. However, there have been few opportunities to see literatures which are directly describing mobile and non-mobile characteristics in tooth structures in the bone. The object of this study was to identify and compare the invisible mobility of OI and mobility of natural teeth in terms of oscillation. Methods: For this study, 143 patients were randomly selected. A total of 191 implants were used with different geometries and surface treatments. Natural teeth scores were also measured for periodontally healthy individuals. Dental mobility checker (TME 500 Yoshida) was utilized as an oscillometer. Results: The numbers created as a score by the impact input of the sensor of a machine represented oscillation. The scores for implants were 1.03±0.23 occlusally, 1.21±0.11 buccally, and 1.26±0.10 lingually. The corresponding direction, data of natural teeth were 1.23± 0.12, 1.27± 0.08, and 1.36± 0.12 in the maxilla and 1.20±0.02, 1.25±0.05, and 1.28±0.05 in the mandible. There was not any significant differences in oscillation among the kinds of implants(p>0.05). Generally the oscillation score of implant was less than that of natural tooth. Probably due to two different oscillation influencing sources; one from PDL and the other from osseointegrated bone. There was also an identical tendency of increased oscillation score from occlusal direction to horizontal direction in both implant and natural tooth(p>0.05). Conclusion: This study indicates that even in osseointegrated implants, a very micron level oscillation effect exists, not in amount but in mode of natural teeth.
