“Quality of life” is a dynamic construct, associated with multiple variables and subject to change over time. The Child Perceptions Questionnaire (CPQ11-14 ) is an age-specific oral-health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) instrument, shown to be valid and reliable for 11-14-year-old American children.

Objective:

To evaluate if changes in perception of OHRQoL occur following 1 year of orthodontic treatment.

Methods:

A convenience sample of 11-14-year-old children, matched for gender and race, was recruited: pediatric dental group (N=64); orthodontic group (N=68); and craniofacial anomaly group (N=48). Subjects completed the CPQ11-14 at enrollment, 6-months and 12-months. The effects of group, time, and group by time were investigated using Factorial ANOVA and Tukey-Kramer procedure.

Results:

Group type had a significant effect on CPQ11-14 total and all 4 domain scores (p<0.05). Time had a significant effect on total CPQ11-14 scores and domain scores for ‘functional limitation' and ‘social well-being' (P<0.01). A significant interaction between group and time was noted for the ‘emotional well-being' domain (P<0.05). Post hoc tests indicated a statistically significant temporal improvement in total CPQ11-14 and ‘emotional- and social well-being' domain scores for the ortho group only (P<0.05). Post hoc tests indicated significant differences between the bilateral cleft and both the ortho and pedo dental groups across time (P<0.05). Finally, there were significant differences between the unilateral cleft and pedo groups at the 6-month and 12-month time periods (P<0.01) and between the unilateral cleft and ortho groups at the 12-month time period (P<0.05).

Conclusion:

The child's OHRQoL is variable depending on oral presentation and improves over time with orthodontic treatment.
