Improving Oral Health Outcomes for Elders: Recommendations from the Elders' Oral Health Summit

Sponsored by: Geriatric Oral Research
Description: Meeting the oral health needs of the 76 million baby boomers who will begin to turn 65 in 2011 will be a daunting task. This joint AADR/IADR-ADEA symposium will disseminate recommendations from the 2004 Elders' Oral Health Summit. The symposium will begin with a review of national (U.S.) data on access to dental care in the elderly, with emphasis on the frail and the institutionalized. Disparities in access to and outcomes of oral health care among elders based on age, race, socioeconomic status, literacy and functional disabilities will be highlighted. Using the Surgeon General’s “Call to Action” as a framework, the Summit generated detailed recommendations on what we still need to know and do to improve oral health access and outcomes among elders across America. The Summit’s recommendations for further research and action will be presented and disseminated. Funded by NIH R-13 DE014703 with corporate sponsorship from GlaxoSmithKline, Dentsply International and Brassler
