Eliminating Health Disparities: Diverse Types of Research - Diverse Funding Sources

Sponsored by: NIDCR
Description: Severe early childhood and other forms of dental caries, oral pharyngeal cancer, periodontal diseases, and orofacial injury are amongst the oral diseases and conditions for which there are health disparities. The factors that contribute to inequalities in oral health status in vulnerable populations are many and complex. Diverse types of research are needed if these inequalities are to be eliminated. A full spectrum of clinical research including epidemiologic studies, behavioral and social sciences research, and randomized clinical trials is crucial. Translational and basis research that explores gene/environment interactions are needed. In addition, health services, health outcomes, health care financing, policy and dissemination research are essential. No single agency or foundation funds all types of health disparities research. This session convenes a panel of officials from U.S. government agencies that support varied types of health disparities research. The presenters will describe current health disparities research-related initiatives and training opportunities. Information about the application process will be provided. In addition, the health disparities research funding process will be discussed from the perspective of an international investigator. This session is appropriate for both junior and experienced investigators
