| Sugars, Carbohydrates, and Oral Health in Developing and Developed Countries | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Sponsored by: Behavioral Sciences, Cariology Research, Nutrition | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Description: The aims of this symposium are to address the relevance of dietary sugars and other carbohydrates in the aetiology and prevention of dental caries in both developing and industrialised countries and to consider country-specific strategies for dietary modification to control sugars intake. To achieve dietary goals for dental health, the wide differences in behavioural culture and dietary practices between countries need to be considered. These issues will be addressed in the following presentations: 1) Sugars, carbohydrates and health, 2) Sugars, carbohydrates and oral health in developing countries, 3) Sugars, carbohydrates and oral health in developed countries and 4) Preventive strategies for oral health in developing and developed countries. In summary, this symposium seeks to: 1) increase understanding of the wide range of dietary carbohydrates found in modern diets and their general and dental health effects, 2) provide knowledge of how dietary traditions and behaviours differ between countries and the relevance of this in terms of oral health, 3) discuss the potential impact of ‘nutrition transition’ on oral health, and 4) consider new approaches to caries prevention through dietary modification for both developed and developing countries | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
